Catching a bus from major cities can prove to be tricky business. Not only do you have to fight for seats during peak season, you also have to be sure of the two places’ time zones so you won’t be late for your appointment. Luckily Boston and New York are in the same time zone so that part is taken care of.
Catching a Bus to New York
It could be 12 noon in New York, but in Chicago it might be 11:30. So if you’re going to catch a bus, you better be sure of the time difference so you won’t be late for your appointment in the big apple. Pennsylvania Station is a big and busy place, and seems a world away from Rochester, New York. At Albany the train divides, with some carriages going to Boston and the remainder to New York City. Four stations in Boston rank between Amtraks 6th and 31st busiest stations.
Day Trips
Amtrak’s California Zephyr uses this line every day, and has had its own trials and tribulations over the years. I have become bored with flying. A handful of terrorists have meant that every day tens of thousands of air travellers are subjected to restrictions on what they can carry, security searches and delays. At one time, flying used to be the quickest way between two points. However, it is now often the most frustrating means of travel. Flights can get delayed due to slightly bad weather. Buses, on the other hand, always travel on schedule whether it’s sunny, windy or rainy.
Boston’s History
The Boston Celtics’ dynasty in NBA Basketball from 1957 to 1969 was as equally impressive as UCLA’s run in the college ranks. I am talking about the New York vs. Boston sports teams. Boston is the capital and the largest city in Massachusetts. It is one of the oldest cities in the United States. Early settlers from Boston, Lincolnshire in England, named it Boston.
Bus Service
The Union Pacific has been rebuilt twice in the 1920’s to keep the line clear. When we found the right car a uniformed woman who introduced herself as Sharon our bus driver met us. This was the start of excellent on-board service. In 1998 Fung Wah began bus service between New York City and Boston’s Chinatowns. On the West Coast, the corridor from Seattle to San Diego receives heavy use, supplanting some of the service by defunct regional air carriers like PSA and Western Airlines.
New York
In 1883, the heads of most of the railroads met in New York City to discuss the map of the railroads. They came up with the idea for the time zones. I travelled with my husband between Rochester, New York, a city with a population of 220,000 and Pennsylvania Station in New York City. Note that on holidays or weekend, the more popular routes (e.g., New York to Washington DC) are hard to pass through. Just because you have a ticket does not mean you are guaranteed your seat. The Giants defeated the New England Patriots to win the Superbowl.
